What is a Spigot toolbar

Spigot Toolbar is a general term that defines multiple commercial web browser add-ons build on the component provided by Spigot. Actual names used with this component are different such as iObit Toolbar, Dealio Toolbar, Widgi Toolbar, Vuze Toolbar, YTD Toolbar, Free RIP Toolbar and etc. Basically, any company can use the toolbar provided by Spigot Inc. with its own logo. This helps to make affiliates and spread this commercial browser hijacker component named by Spigot as a “Toolbar” or “Browser Helper Object”. This “helper object” might cause stability problems with some web browsers; though, they do the work that they are designed for and bring more chances for promoted companies to sell you something else. If you study privacy policy of the search redirect pages, you will find that this websites are gathering some information on your browsing habits and preferences in order to serve you search results that are modified accordingly. These modified results promote companies that pay for promotion through this search redirect. It makes a business of redirecting search quite profitable for companies like Spigot and its affiliates. The framework of different toolbars built on the Spigot patform is called Widgi. These toolbars are often installed with other programs and use for monetizing freeway and shareware program development. The most known of the Widgi flock are Vuze, Dealio, YouTubeDownloader, and MyBrowserBar. Companies like iObit and Softcom use this platform to promote their products or monetize ones distributed for free.

Spigot Toolbar Developer's Home Page

As the picture above, this sample description of the Spigot toolbar tells you what it is all about:

“The IObit Toolbar is a small application that attaches to your browser. The toolbar offers a way to search the web and stay connected to friends and colleagues. The toolbar installation comes with a way of also uninstalling it. The uninstall process takes a few moments. – Spigot, Revenue and Engagement on Tap. Keep your customers coming back and delight them with contextually relevant content and applications. Your users already search, shop, and consume a variety of applications all across the Internet. Now you can share in those revenue streams too. Place your brand right in front of customers while they are browsing. Custom toolbars made just for you.”

There is an excerpt of Privacy policy from a search redirect page that let you evaluate the degree of risk to your privacy that comes as a part of Spigot toolbar use and decide if the service provided worth such a risk or not:

“By installing the Toolbar on your computer, you expressly authorize and request Spigot to: a) act as your search agent to conduct inquiries on your behalf using Spigot’s search engine and technologies and partners’ sites, and collect relevant information and display it to you;…”

I think that unless you are a shopping addict, then this toolbars do not bring you any real value besides an attempt to direct your purchases and teach you what you need to buy else. If you do not need this kind of guidance, then watch carefully while installing free programs or media files. The toolbars with altered search engines are a quite popular way of making money today, and search redirect components might be automatically installed along with a program you download unless you find an announcement and some kind of switch for this option and turn it off before installing a program.

Compared to other add-ons with search redirect, Spigot toolbars come with a good uninstaller that removes all the components instead of making only a half-way uninstall with browsers still set redirected to promoted websites. For removing Spigot toolbar, you need to open Control Panel and start “Add/Remove Programs” utility. Then, you need find and remove Spigot components as any other program, and it should go. Follow the instruction related to your OS version:
For Windows 7 and Vista

  1. Select Control Panel from the Start menu.
  2. Find and click Programs and Features (If in a Program Category”, click Uninstall a program instead.
  3. Select the toolbar components, usually named Dealio, Widgi, and the name of a search page that you are redirected to by Spigot engine, and click Uninstall, or use contextual menu for this purpose. To locate such components in the list of installed programs, you can look at the “Publisher” column for names Spigot and Widgi

For Windows XP

  1. Select Control Panel from the Start menu

  3. Select the toolbar, usually named as a search page that you are redirected to by Spigot engine, and click Remove.

Note: The name of the components in the list of installed programs will be set to objects installed by Spigot Inc. Look for component names prefixed with iObit, Widgi and other names associated with Spigot Inc. as a publisher.
If the uninstallers for Spigot toolbar components are missed or somehow altered by cyber criminals to prevent removal, then you will need to remove them manually in a significantly more complex way.

First you need to run msconfig, exe program from a command input box in the Run utility on Windows XP, or use Search box at the Start menu bottom for typing command and clicking it at the top of the list of found programs on Windows 7 and Vista. You might need to confirm starting this program with administrative privileges. In the opened window, you need to find and uncheck searchsettings.exe in the list of startup programs.

To prevent it from starting along with your browsers, you need to manually remove registry keys associated with this program (searchsettings.exe). Start Registry Editor just like you start msconfig in a previous step. Use regedit.exe command instead. Use “Find” option in “Edit” menu to find all the references to searchsettings.exe and delete them all.

Note: Working with system registry database is quite confusing to an average computer user, and errors made in system registry might cause complete system failure. To prevent problems save backup files for the keys being removed using “Export” option in the “File” menu of the Registry Editor. Use .REG extension for saved files and place them in some convenient location. If something goes wrong after you remove a key from the registry, then just double-click a corresponding backup file, and your system should be restored.
When the registry keys are removed, then you can safely open “Program Files” folder, located in the Windows installation disk root, find and open folder named “common files”, and delete /spigot/ folder with all files it contains.
